Saying hi to yourself, others, and abstract art (for highly sensitive people)

Writer: Dr Pranita RaoDr Pranita Rao

An abstract artwork
An abstract representation of emotions related to high sensitivity, creativity, and one's needs.

Often, we feel that we need to have many conversations or spend a lot of time with people, activities, and spaces to fulfill our needs.

I'm here to tell you that sometimes, less could be more. This could apply for anyone who enjoys conversations or is an extrovert like me.

This past week, I have been busy with hospital duty, as my dad had to get operated on for a nerve injury. He got discharged today and is walking again. So, all is well.

However, amidst the testing time, I said hi to myself, others, and abstract art. I didn't believe that I would be able to schedule time for some people, spaces, and activities. However, I was able to achieve tiny milestones.

My milestones were as follows:

  • I said hi to myself by going to a cafe for two hours. I spent time budgeting and making ambitious financial plans for my future.

  • I said hi to my 5-year-old and 10-year-old friends. I heard them tell me about their day.

  • I was able to say hi to abstract art by spending an hour with my canvas book after my hospital duty. I made abstract artworks inspired by my sensitivity, emotions, and colors for my abstract art book.

As highly sensitive people, we have the gift of sensitivity.

Dr Elaine Aron, a high-sensitivity expert mentions that sensitivity isn't a weakness. We may have stronger emotional responses or be intensely affected by our environment. We might consider the intensity to be a disadvantage. Many individuals unaware of the trait might be critical; however, emotional intensity can alert individuals aware of the high-sensitivity trait too.

Research suggests that high sensitivity makes one attentive to new information. As highly sensitive people, we can process situations differently and to a greater degree.

This difference in processing creates stronger emotional responses.

I consider my high sensitivity trait to be my superpower.

Here's why:

  • The cafe date I took this week made me feel like I got the me-time I required. It made me sensitive towards my future and took my attention towards my inner child's needs. I guess my inner child wanted to be assured of my financial future.

  • The greetings to my 5-year-old and 7-year-old friends reminded me that I was remembered. It reminded me that I mattered to someone else. My high sensitivity towards my needs allowed me to receive happy moments from my friends.

  • The time I spent creating abstract artwork made me feel free. It helped me rekindle my artistic sensitivity and emotional sensitivity. It made me realize the importance of different colors, emotions, and textures for my overall personality development.

Surprisingly, these three greetings felt adequate to acknowledge my high sensitivity towards myself, others, and abstract art.

I realize I processed my dad's health situation differently. Given that my emotions surrounding this situation were intense, I relied on shorter, creative experiences to hold me.

What about you, highly sensitive soul?

Who/what can you greet to recognize your superpowers and high sensitivity?

Also, I would like to say hi to you.

Hi!

:)

-3, 2, 1, Cheers,

Pranita
